Arch Enemy was formed in 1995 by guitarist Michael Amott, formerly of Carcass, Candlemass and Carnage. Other band members included his brother Christopher, bassist/vocalist Johan Liiva and drummer Daniel Erlandsson. Their debut album Black Earth was released in 1996.

After several lineup changes, Arch Enemy found a new vocalist for their fourth album, 2001's Wages Of Sin. Angela Gossow breathed new life into the band and drew a lot of attention being a female death metal vocalist.

With 2003's Anthems Of Rebellion and 2005's Doomsday Machine, Arch Enemy secured their place as one of the most popular and successful death metal bands in the world. In 2005 yet another lineup change occurred. Original member Christopher Amott left the band and was replaced by Fredrik Åkesson.
